A U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia recently announced in a farewell email to staff that the DC Ethics Panel is currently under investigation. This communication came as Martin was preparing to transition to a new role at the Department of Justice (DOJ).
Martin resigned this week after hurdles arose during his nomination, particularly from GOP Senators. President Trump has appointed him to lead a new working group focused on weaponization at the DOJ.
In the email, Martin warned his team that he is being investigated by the DC Bar’s Disciplinary Advisory Office (ODC), which addresses complaints against attorneys in the city.
It seems Martin initiated a complaint involving ODC’s head, Hamilton “Phill” Fox, stating, “I’m taking Mr. Fox head on. His actions are personally insulting and professionally unacceptable,” as revealed in an email obtained by Hill.
He expressed frustration, noting, “It’s rage how they treat us, and we will continue our fight against the weaponization of our legal licenses against us.”
Martin has faced at least two requests for ethical investigations concerning the ODC.
Letters from Senator Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) of the Senate Judiciary Committee and other Democrats outlined a series of concerns. Martin reportedly continued representing a defendant in a case while serving as an interim U.S. attorney, which raised eyebrows.
Durbin pointed out, “By not recusing himself, Martin has created an unacceptable emergence of conflicts of interest,” highlighting how his position may have improperly influenced his client’s situation.
The letter also referenced a social media post by Martin directed at Elon Musk, in which he vowed to hold accountable those acting unethically in government operations.
There have been discussions about demands for progress, but it remains unclear which specific requests Martin was alluding to in his email. Durbin’s office has not responded to inquiries for additional comments.
Demand Progress received replies from Fox’s office requesting more information, though the group noted that formal organization of these requests is still pending.
