A Call for a New Constitution

A leftist columnist recently suggested in the New York Times that the United States may need a new constitution. In an interview, Ojuzeta Nwanevu, an editor, outlined his vision for what this new constitutional framework might include.

During the conversation, he was asked about proposed reforms. He highlighted a critical perspective many Americans hold regarding the undemocratic aspects of the current system. He pointed to longstanding support among the public for changes to the electoral college and mentioned ongoing discussions about moving towards a referendum-based approach at the state level, which could potentially bypass constitutional amendments. He added that altering the constitution is a challenging process, often requiring a difficult consensus among states to proceed with significant changes.

Nwanevu emphasized the necessity of addressing the ideological imbalances he perceives in the Senate. He suggested that adding a new state could help balance representation, although he clarified that this wouldn’t constitute a permanent amendment.

Back in February 2022, while Democrat Joe Biden was still in office, he remarked to Senate judicial leaders that the U.S. Constitution is “always evolving.” According to reports, he noted that nominations often spark new national debates around its interpretation.

Later surveys indicated that a significant portion of Democrats view the Constitution as fundamentally “racist” and “sexist.”

In 2023, the Guardian published Nwanevu’s opinion piece in which he praised the legal actions against former President Donald Trump, labeling them a “victory.” However, Trump has consistently maintained his innocence regarding these charges.
