Education Watchdog Raises Concerns Over Social Work Accreditation

A notable education oversight group is expressing serious concerns following the release of a report indicating that the accreditation system for bachelor’s and master’s social work programs at leading U.S. universities is heavily influenced by DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion), critical race theory, and other left-leaning ideologies.

The report, published by Defending Education, examines the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), the body responsible for accrediting these programs. It finds that DEI is positioned as a foundational aspect of the curriculum designed for aspiring social workers across numerous institutions.

According to the findings, eight out of nine competencies in CSWE’s 2022 Education Policy and Accreditation Standards reference concepts like “anti-racism” and “anti-oppression,” frequently alongside discussions of “privilege” and “social justice.” In fact, more than 500 of the 897 accredited social work programs have these DEI elements embedded in their competency frameworks.

For instance, Competency 3, titled “Practicing Anti-Racism, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion,” stipulates that future social workers must “comprehend how racism and oppression influence human experiences” and recognize the lingering impacts of white supremacy and privilege, utilizing that understanding to engage in anti-racist actions.

The report notes incidents of implicit bias, such as in the University of Alaska Anchorage’s master’s program, which requires applicants to provide writing samples that showcase their understanding of core social work concepts—including the promotion of human rights and broader social justice initiatives.

Other examples indicate that prospective students appear to be asked to showcase their endorsement of race-based doctrines. For instance, applicants for West Virginia University’s master’s program are required to write about their support for DEI principles in their professional endeavors, while University of Maine faculty are expected to outline their commitment to promoting anti-racism and DEI.

Interestingly, the CSWE has amassed over $40 million in fees from universities for accreditations since 2016. The report also points out that the Biden administration’s Department of Education has granted more than $90 million to over 20 social work programs that focus on anti-racism and related diversity goals.

Reagan Dugan, the higher education project manager at Defending Education, emphasized to Fox News Digital that the findings demonstrate a significant deviation from the primary mission of social work education. “K-12 students are currently facing a mental health crisis, and these programs should equip future social workers to aid students and educators rather than focusing on divisive theories,” Dugan remarked. “Regrettably, many universities seem to prefer classes centered on ideological concepts. Some, like Boston University, even offer courses on themes such as ‘racial capitalism’ and ‘structural racism,’ which don’t adequately prepare students to meet actual needs in schools.”

Fox News Digital has sought a response from CSWE regarding these findings.
