Progressive Democrat Defends Ties to Controversial Streamer in New York Election
A progressive Democrat, Effie Phillips Staley, is in the midst of a heated race for a New York congressional seat in the upcoming midterm elections. She’s facing some backlash regarding her association with Hasan Piker, a well-known far-left streamer.
Phillips Staley is vying to take over the role currently held by U.S. Rep. Mike Lawler (R.N.Y.), who has decided not to run again. In March, Piker stirred controversy by labeling Israel an “apartheid state” and accusing it of genocide in Gaza.
Democratic county leaders from Phillips-Staley’s district have publicly criticized her for this relationship, claiming it endorses “anti-Semitic, racist, and misogynistic rhetoric.”
Even with this criticism, the number of candidates in the race is increasing. Phillips Staley shared with Fox News Digital that Piker, at 34, plays a crucial role in helping Democrats connect with younger voters.
“We might not agree on everything, but the platform he offers can engage millions of young people in politics,” Phillips Staley commented. She suggested that in a time of division, building bridges is key. She emphasized her commitment to universal human rights, including for Palestinians, while also standing against anti-Semitism.
Piker has faced backlash for past statements, including one suggesting that “America deserved 9/11,” although he later called that remark “inappropriate.” He has also come under fire for derogatory comments about Orthodox Jews and has denied accusations of antisemitism, despite tensions in Israel-Palestine relations.
Peters Staley has echoed support for Piker during various media appearances, arguing his controversial comments were taken out of context and aligning him with those advocating for Palestinian rights.
Critics from Lawler’s campaign responded sharply, stating, “Normalizing the glorification of terrorism and inflammatory remarks is disqualifying.” They urged voters to reconsider if they want someone like Phillips Staley in a leadership role.
Some within her party see Piker’s endorsement as problematic. Notable figures like Sens. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.) and Cory Booker (D-N.J.) have distanced themselves from his platform, concerned about its implications.
Phillips Staley believes that a strong stance against Israel could provide a significant advantage in the upcoming elections. “The majority of Democratic voters want a shift in our approach to this issue,” she stated, referencing recent polling that reflected declining support for Israel among Democrats and independents.
However, it’s uncertain whether this strategy will resonate with voters in her predominantly Jewish district. Phillips Staley expressed hope that her campaign will be seen as genuinely progressive and focused on human rights.
Meanwhile, tensions within the political landscape have escalated, with Lawler’s campaign alleging that Phillips Staley’s campaign forged signatures to participate in the June primary. This paints a complex picture of what could be a tight race.
