Valdez’s Fourth of July Posts Spark Controversy
New York state Representative Claire Valdez faced significant backlash over the weekend due to her Fourth of July social media posts advocating for pro-Palestinian causes. This drew criticism from various commentators who questioned her priorities during a time when many Americans celebrated the nation’s milestone anniversary.
Valdez, who identifies as a socialist and is set to represent a predominantly Democratic area in New York City, made her statements on Saturday. It was a day when citizens across the nation marked the 250th anniversary of the United States.
Interestingly, her posts, along with those from other candidates supported by the Democratic Socialist Party of America, did not seem to acknowledge or celebrate any positive aspects of the United States or its founding principles.
In her message on social media, Valdez stated, “We will continue to fight for the liberation of Palestine to Puerto Rico, the Green New Deal, and the world we deserve.”
Various commentators voiced their disapproval. One remarked, “In reality, Independence Day is not about Palestine,” while another commented on what they viewed as misplaced priorities within the modern Democratic Party, noting that July 4th has become entangled with issues far removed from its original intent.
Valdez recently won the Democratic primary for a congressional seat in the Brooklyn and Queens areas, enjoying support from New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani. Given the progressive leanings of her district, it’s expected that she will face little opposition in the upcoming general election.
This recent election saw Valdez and other socialist candidates outperforming establishment-backed Democrats, marking a significant shift within the party’s left wing.
Alongside her fellow candidates, Valdez has called for halting military aid to Israel, pushing for a Green New Deal-type framework, and advocating for a single-payer healthcare system in the form of Medicare for All. Their potential success in Congress could lead to increased calls for higher taxes on wealthy individuals and corporations, whom they blame for many of the nation’s challenges.
In her posts, Valdez asserted, “Freedom is only possible if good living conditions exist: healthcare, housing, education, dignity at work.” She expressed frustration with systemic issues and environmental degradation attributed to wealthy elites.
This perspective drew additional critique, with one commentator noting the seeming obsessions with the negatives of some people, suggesting that perhaps celebrating Independence Day with typical traditions would be more fitting.
Interestingly, Valdez’s posts resonate with Mayor Mamdani’s own Fourth of July address, where he highlighted various historical injustices while condemning the extreme wealth disparity in America today. He remarked on the paradox of living in a nation of great wealth while children face hunger, implicitly alluding to figures like Elon Musk without naming him.
Fox News Digital attempted to contact Valdez’s campaign for a response, but there wasn’t an immediate reply.
