Efforts for a Palestinian State Benefit Hamas and Threaten Jews

France recently summoned Ambassador Charles Kushner, expressing concerns over President Emmanuel Macron’s handling of rising anti-Semitism. In a letter, Kushner warned that this issue might attract an official response suggesting that Israel is holding militants accountable.

This diplomatic tension adds to the existing strain between Washington and Paris regarding Jewish security and France’s policies in the Middle East. Kushner’s criticisms were notably pronounced, especially given the timing of the letter on the anniversary of the Allied Liberation in Paris.

Kushner shared a grim assessment of the situation for Jewish people in France, claiming that anti-Semitism has significantly worsened since Hamas’s attack on October 7, 2023. He noted that daily life for Jews has become daunting, with reports of attacks in streets and threats to Jewish businesses and institutions. He mentioned that even places like kindergartens have reported incidents of anti-Semitism.

Additionally, he criticized Macron’s policies regarding the Middle East, implying that a perceived alignment with extremist groups endangers Jews in France. Drawing from his personal ties to President Donald Trump, Kushner referenced shared family backgrounds to emphasize their commitment to counteracting anti-Semitism.

The letter highlighted various actions taken during the Trump administration to protect Jewish communities, such as implementing civil rights measures for Jewish students and conducting rigorous vetting for foreigners. Kushner argued that effective leadership can successfully combat anti-Semitism, as evidenced by actions against Iran’s nuclear program, which he sees as a threat to global Jewish safety.

He expressed concerns about the public sentiment among French Jews, many of whom worry about a repeat of historical atrocities, leading some parents to encourage their children to leave the country. This fear stems from widespread beliefs that another Holocaust could happen in Europe.

Kushner directly challenged the educational system in France, questioning what children are being taught if such ignorance persists. He concluded his letter with a call to action, urging Macron to enforce hate crime laws vigorously and to ensure safety for Jewish institutions.

The French government’s decision to engage Kushner in diplomatic discussions indicates their dissatisfaction with his public remarks, representing one of the most significant diplomatic strains between allies in recent times. Although there has been no formal response from French officials to the letter’s specific claims, it illustrates the growing tensions.

Last week’s diplomatic crisis escalated after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticized Macron’s support for Palestinian statehood, suggesting it exacerbates anti-Semitic sentiments. In response, the French presidency dismissed Netanyahu’s claims as unfounded, highlighting the ongoing rift and signaling a possible intensification of U.S. diplomatic pressure concerning the protection of Jewish communities in Europe.
