School Athletes Injured in Daylight Crash

A group of high school athletes in California faced a devastating incident during their practice on Wednesday afternoon, as a driver suspected of being under the influence struck them, according to police reports.

Eight students from the Anaheim High School track and field team suffered injuries in this tragic event, leaving parents in shock. “It’s heartbreaking. The first thing I did was call my two sons to check if they were okay. They probably know some of the kids involved,” stated Eddie Martinez, a concerned parent.

The runners had been waiting near a crosswalk on a busy Anaheim street when an orange Toyota Corolla veered onto the sidewalk and collided with them. The vehicle was driven by 27-year-old Anthony Alba Palafox, who, according to police, exhibited clear signs of intoxication at the scene.

Both Alba Palafox and the injured students were taken to the hospital for treatment of various injuries. Surveillance footage reviewed by authorities showed the car barreling through a green light, crashing into the athletes before hitting a low brick wall.

The team, comprising boys and girls aged 16 and 17, was accompanied by an adult coach, who fortunately escaped unharmed.

In an update, California Congressman Lou Correa mentioned that it seems all students are on the path to recovery, although one has yet to receive the results of further medical tests. He expressed thoughts of support for the families affected, emphasizing the community’s concern.

Alba Palafox has since been arrested on charges related to driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. A search warrant for the vehicle involved is currently in process.
