Eileen Gu’s Response to Olympics Coverage
Eileen Gu, the Olympic freestyle skier from California who decided to represent China instead of the U.S., reacted with laughter to a reporter’s question regarding her performance at this year’s Winter Olympics. The question was about whether she felt disappointed for not securing a gold medal yet.
So far, Gu has earned silver medals in her events and still has one more opportunity to compete for gold in the halfpipe. When asked if she saw her results as winning silver or losing the chance at gold, Gu found the question amusing.
She confidently remarked, “I’m the most decorated female freeskier of all time. That speaks for itself.” Gu emphasized the importance of every medal, noting that each victory at the Olympics is a significant achievement and that the pressure to perform can be challenging. She mentioned, “I’m showing off my best skiing and pushing my limits, so that’s what matters.” She also dismissed the notion of her situation being a failure.
Gu, who previously won gold in the big air and halfpipe events at the Beijing Olympics in 2022, is facing high expectations this year. However, she has only secured silver thus far. Her upcoming halfpipe competition will be another chance for her to aim for gold.
Throughout her career, Gu has remained a figure of controversy. Recently, she responded to former President Trump’s remarks about Team USA skier Hunter Hess, who expressed discomfort wearing the team’s gear amid various issues in the U.S. Gu criticized Trump’s comments as misaligned with the spirit of sportsmanship.
