Michigan Democratic Senate hopeful embraces Hasan Piker despite controversial remarks
Abdul El-Sayed, a Democratic Senate candidate in Michigan, has chosen to align himself with Hasan Piker, a left-wing influencer known for making inflammatory comments about events like 9/11 and criticisms of American patriotism. Piker has previously stated that America ‘deserved’ the 9/11 attacks, which has raised eyebrows among some party members. As the Michigan Senate race heats up, there are concerns that this partnership could alienate moderate voters and jeopardize Democratic chances in the pivotal midterms.
As Americans get ready to observe the 25th anniversary of 9/11, El-Sayed’s public schedule for that day lacks any mention of remembrance. Instead, he has planned to attend a Mexican festival, a farmers’ market, and a county fair. His campaign site listed him for events such as Grand Rapids’ Fiesta Mexicana and the Allegan County Fair, all while he’s on his “Shouldn’t Be This Hard” tour.
In response to inquiries about the missing 9/11 event on his schedule, El-Sayed’s team stated that he would indeed be attending a memorial that day, even though it wasn’t included on his campaign website. A spokesperson emphasized that El-Sayed considers the 9/11 attacks a grave moment in history and would be participating in the remembrance.
The events planned have a distinctly jubilant vibe. For instance, the Fiesta Mexicana is set to feature a blend of music, food, and cultural celebrations intended to highlight and honor Mexican culture in West Michigan. Supporters have been encouraged to bring along some cultural flair and enjoy the festivities.
Moreover, the Allegan County Fair is all about entertainment, complete with rides and games. El-Sayed’s campaign did indicate that he wouldn’t be attending two of the four events listed but unfortunately didn’t specify which ones.
The campaign didn’t clarify why the 9/11 memorial wasn’t initially listed, yet it reiterated that El-Sayed recognizes the significance of the day. His spokeswoman insisted that he sees the September 11th terrorist attacks as a malicious assault on American freedom and will be joining fellow citizens to honor the anniversary.
El-Sayed’s connection to 9/11 has been complicated. Earlier in the campaign, he faced scrutiny when a clip of Piker resurfaced in which the streamer made disparaging comments regarding the attacks. El-Sayed labeled that remark as “dumb,” yet he didn’t distance himself from Piker. Additionally, old posts and blogs from El-Sayed featuring provocative takes about the attacks came to light, further complicating his stance.
Fox News Digital previously highlighted that El-Sayed had drawn controversial parallels between 9/11 and events like January 6, going so far as to equate President Donald Trump with Osama bin Laden. He called for Americans to direct the same level of outrage over the COVID-19 pandemic as they did for 9/11 and expressed mourning for those lost in the War on Terror.
