Abdul El-Sayed Challenges Mike Rogers to Football Match

During a recent exchange, Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed intensified his ongoing rivalry with Republican candidate Mike Rogers, who is over two decades older than him. El-Sayed accused Rogers of being “too scary” to debate, leading him to propose a tackle football match instead.

On X, El-Sayed said, “You’re too afraid to argue with me, so why don’t you ‘hold me accountable’ on the soccer field instead? Tackle, I don’t have any pads like I used to play with when I was a kid. I’d be happy to show you.” He added that he has a fondness for football.

At 63, Rogers is older than El-Sayed, who is 41. This unexpected challenge arose as Rogers attempts to pivot El-Sayed’s past criticisms of soccer culture into a campaign narrative. Meanwhile, El-Sayed often highlights sports, fitness, and masculinity to attract male voters. The dialogue soon turned personal, with Rogers’ team mocking El-Sayed’s height in response instead of accepting the challenge.

Previous Controversies

El-Sayed’s post followed a clip of Rogers taking aim at his previous comments about football and Independence Day. Rogers stated on Fox News, “This man spent hours hating something that most Michiganders would enjoy for entertainment, and he should be held accountable for that. He had strong views, but knew he had to distance himself from them… If people really knew who he was, they wouldn’t vote for him.”

In an essay from October 2021, El-Sayed spoke about “toxic masculinity” in sports, arguing that it runs deeper than just a few emails or comments from celebrities.

Some people allege that these prior statements reflect El-Sayed’s dislike for football. However, El-Sayed played football from a young age and even captained his high school team, calling sports his “lifeline.” While he criticizes negative aspects of male sports culture, he also defends masculinity and has scolded Democratic politicians for dismissing men. His social media often features fitness content aimed at engaging male voters.

In return, Rogers’ camp joked about El-Sayed’s height, pointing out, “It’s a very big threat coming from below,” referencing his stature. They even shared a GIF of Will Ferrell saying, “He’s an angry elf” to highlight El-Sayed’s challenge.

El-Sayed’s height was recorded as 5 feet 9 inches during his collegiate lacrosse career, though a 2008 article mentioned him at 5 feet 8 inches.

As of now, El-Sayed’s campaign has not issued any comments on these developments.
