Elaine Chao stayed in China while McConnell was hospitalized.

Former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao traveled to China while her husband, Senator Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), was hospitalized. His health status is somewhat unclear, but a spokesperson for Chao stated that her trip was planned long in advance for family charity work. Due to the situation, there was no urgent need for her to return home.

Senator McConnell was found “unconscious” at his residence last month, and details about his current condition are still not available. Though Chao has since returned to the U.S., McConnell remains hospitalized three weeks later, with no updates about when he might resume his duties in the Senate.

The silence from McConnell’s office regarding his health has led to rampant speculations online, particularly given that he is the longest-serving Republican Senate leader and is expected to retire at the end of his term this year. Conservative commentator Laura Loomer recently claimed that a “senior official close to the White House” suggested McConnell is “brain dead” and unlikely to return.

This has drawn criticism, especially from House Democrats, who are calling for more transparency from public officials regarding health issues that affect their roles. The White House has not commented on Loomer’s statements, which surfaced after leaked audio from an emergency call on June 14 indicated that McConnell was “unconscious” and might have suffered a heart attack.

In response to the ongoing rumors, a spokesperson for McConnell reiterated a previous message, acknowledging the public support for the senator during his recovery. They stated that he has been improving and is staying in touch with his team regarding Kentucky and Senate matters.

Amidst all this, Senate Republican leaders like John Thune and John Barrasso have tried to dispel rumors. They noted they had spoken with McConnell recently, providing reassurances about his engagement with Senate issues. Barrasso’s spokesperson mentioned that their conversation included discussions on national security and ongoing Senate business, showcasing McConnell’s commitment to returning to his duties.
