Elderly woman mauled and partially eaten by pigs on Christmas day, police say

Ohio State Police say they are investigating the death of an elderly woman who was attacked and partially eaten by a pig on Christmas Day.

According to reports, the Pataskala Police Department said officers were called to the home of 75-year-old Rebecca Westergaard Rigney for a welfare check after she failed to show up for a family holiday celebration. WBNS-TV report.

“I've never seen a pig anywhere other than the market down the street. It's very confusing.”

When police arrived at Ms Rigney's home on Mink Street, they found her dead on the front steps of the balcony, with injuries to her legs.

The responding officer said that while he was trying to secure the area, a large pig appeared near the home and someone told him the pig belonged to a neighbor. Police found at least two pigs at a neighbor's home and the owners were told they needed to be quarantined for investigation.

The Licking County Coroner's Office ruled her death an accident, determining that Rigney bled to death due to extensive surface damage caused by livestock. He also said she was taking blood thinners and had a pre-existing heart condition.

police said The Columbus mission said it was unclear whether charges would be filed against the owner because the attacker was a domestic animal, not a dog.

“If it's a pit bull or a Rottweiler, or the names of 15 other dogs that are considered semi-aggressive, we'll know right away,” said Pataskala Police Chief Bruce Brooks. Ta. “But as livestock, we have never dealt with them here before.”

Neighbor David Mullins spoke to WBNS about the incident.

“It's pretty crazy and wild. There aren't any wild pigs roaming around. I've never seen any other than the market down the street. It's very confusing,” Mullins said. “It would be nice to find out what actually happened. What's going on in our neighborhood?”

An official report from the coroner's office is expected to be completed within four to six weeks.
