Elderly woman who fatally harmed her dying husband in a failed suicide agreement feels no remorse after standoff with police.

An elderly woman has expressed that she feels no regrets after shooting her terminally ill husband in a failed attempt to end his suffering, stating there was “nothing else” she could do.

Ellen Gilland, 76, fatally shot her husband Jerry, 77, at AdventHealth Hospital in Daytona Beach on January 21, 2023. This incident led to a lengthy standoff with police before she was taken into custody.

Plans for the couple’s suicide were made around New Year’s, as Jerry was grappling with severe health issues, including a form of dementia and depression. Law enforcement mentioned that Jerry had intended to take his own life but lacked the strength to lift the weapon, prompting Ellen to pull the trigger instead.

Ellen described herself as a non-violent person and emphasized that she never intended to hurt the hospital staff who cared for Jerry during his last days.

She recounted feeling overwhelmed, initially intending to end her own life but panicking when a nurse approached, thinking someone had collapsed. This led her to brandish the gun in a moment of hysteria.

This act resulted in a lockdown at the hospital as patients and staff secured themselves in their rooms. Ellen was arrested hours later, escorted out in handcuffs.

She eventually pled no contest to charges of manslaughter, aggravated assault with a firearm, and aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer. After serving some time in prison, she was released in November and is now on probation for 12 years, along with community service obligations.

Reflecting on her situation now, Ellen mentioned that she is trying to “accept the consequences” of her choices but maintains there were no other alternatives available at that time.

“We have to figure out how to get through this,” she noted.

Ellen and Jerry had been together since middle school, and she finds it challenging to navigate life without him. “I knew how difficult it would be to be without him,” she shared, although she prefers to avoid conversations surrounding the specifics of their suicide pact and its aftermath.
