Election forecaster moves NC gubernatorial race toward Democrats

North Carolina gubernatorial election projections swung in favor of the Democrats on Wednesday, with recent polls showing Democratic candidate Attorney General Josh Stein leading Republican candidate Lt. Governor Mark Robinson by a sizable margin.

Sabbat's crystal ball moved The evaluation is Given recent polling and the large fundraising advantage Stein's campaign has built, the race has gone from “close” to “Democrat-favored.” This is one of the relatively few serious gubernatorial races this year, and pits former President Trump against Vice President Harris in a presidential battleground state.

Sabato's explanation for the change noted that Robinson “embodies the MAGA wing” of the Republican Party more than any other state official in North Carolina and is known for making a variety of provocative statements about a number of issues, including abortion and LGBTQ people.

he Refers to homosexuality He has also called “transgenderism” “filth” and often referred to abortion as “murder” and “genocide,” but has appeared to soften his stance in recent days, after a campaign ad released this month revealing that he and his wife had an abortion 30 years ago.

Robinson said she supports the state's current 12-week birth control ban, which allows for “common-sense exceptions” such as rape, incest and protecting the life of the mother.

Forecasters said Stein has avoided discussing Robinson's conspiracy theories, but has been a vocal critic of her conservative stance on abortion. Robinson was overtaken Ad support prevails by more than two-to-one margin.

Several recent polls in the race have shown Stein's lead widening, with her leading by 10 points in The Hill/Decision Desk polling average.

But Sabato noted that double-digit wins are rare in North Carolina, and Stein's lead is likely not as large as the polls suggest. Outgoing term-limited Gov. Roy Cooper (D) held an 11-point polling lead before the 2020 election but only won by about 4.5 points.

“It would be a surprise if Stein were to win or even surpass Cooper's 2020 vote margin, but we're comfortable considering him a modest favorite to win,” Sabatos said.

The rating change came one day after the Cook Political Report also changed its rating. Race Rating Leaning towards the Democratic Party.
