Elias Rodriguez identified as a suspect in the murder of two staff members from the Israeli embassy

Suspect Identified in Shooting of Israeli Embassy Staff in D.C.

The individual accused of shooting two Israeli embassy staff members in Washington, D.C., has been named as Elias Rodriguez, a 30-year-old from Chicago. The incident reportedly unfolded as the victims, Jaron Lisinsky and Sarah Milgrim, were leaving an event.

The Israeli embassy confirmed that the two victims were engaged, and according to Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson Pamela Smith, Rodriguez was in custody shortly after the shooting. A firearm was found at the scene.

Katie Karisher, who was present at the museum during the event, mentioned in an interview that she interacted with Rodriguez prior to his arrest. She described him as appearing distressed and wet, having entered the facility after asking someone to call the police. “I asked him if he liked the museum,” she recounted, and noted that he responded awkwardly. Then, in a surprising turn, he claimed responsibility for the gunfire, shouting, “I did this for Gaza!” before police arrived and took him into custody.

As authorities looked into the incident, it seemed that Rodriguez had been outside the museum when he began shooting, prompting a group of four, which included the two victims, to exit the building.

Once inside the museum, he was apprehended by event security while reportedly yelling “Free Palestine!” Authorities were quick to act following his statements.

Rodriguez had a LinkedIn profile that indicated he previously worked for the American Osteopathic Information Association. Earlier, he served as a production and logistics coordinator and had experience as an oral history researcher at an organization that highlighted personal stories from both renowned and lesser-known figures in African American history.

His biography, now removed from the organization’s website, mentioned that he was born in Chicago and graduated with a degree in English from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Before joining the historical project in 2023, he had experience as a content writer for various tech companies, both commercial and non-profit. Hobbies listed included reading fiction, attending live music events, and exploring new places.

Neither of the organizations Rodriguez was affiliated with have responded to requests for comment. Previously, he was involved in protests regarding social justice issues, particularly as it related to police violence and housing disparities in Chicago.

After the shooting, the Party for Socialism and Liberation made a statement distancing themselves from Rodriguez, emphasizing that he had no current connection to their activities.

As investigations continue, many are left grappling with the implications of this tragic event and its broader social context.
