Legal Analyst Critiques AG James Over Political Hypocrisy
CNN’s senior legal analyst Ellie Honig sharply criticized New York Attorney General Letitia James for what she views as hypocrisy in her allegations against Donald Trump, particularly related to accusations of political retribution.
In his first public appearance following his indictment on mortgage fraud charges concerning a home in Norfolk, Virginia, Trump condemned the use of political tactics against him. Honig remarked on CNN News Central that James’s actions demonstrate a form of political weaponization aimed at Trump, even as she claimed he was using the legal system to “silence the truth and punish dissent.”
“On a broader level, there’s a lot of hypocrisy here,” Honig noted. “It’s clear Trump targeted Letitia James politically, which is evident in his social media activity and the efforts to oust prosecutors hesitant to bring these charges.” She acknowledged that James might have grounds to dismiss the case before it goes to trial. Nonetheless, she emphasized that this situation isn’t without parallels — James herself ran for office with Trump as a specific target, raising funds off the issue. Her lawsuit, while not completely dismissed, faced significant pushback in court.
“They’re both at fault, targeting one another, and it’s hard to say one has more moral high ground than the other,” Honig added.
James initiated a civil lawsuit against Trump and the Trump Organization in September 2022, claiming he inflated his worth by billions for better loan terms. A judge later ruled that Trump owed $355 million, although an appeals court reversed this ruling in August 2025.
Honig expressed concern that James’s public comments could negatively impact her case, emphasizing that her statements were not directly tied to the mortgage fraud charges.
James faces a federal indictment for bank fraud and providing false information to a financial institution related to a $109,600 loan secured for a home purchased on August 17, 2020. The indictment claims she was to use the property as a second residence without sharing ownership or using it as a rental.
During a campaign event for Democratic mayoral candidate Zoran Mamdani, James encouraged her supporters to uphold “all norms and all rule of law,” prompting cheers of “We love Tish” from the crowd.
