Elizabeth Banks and the Fascism Debate

It seems like the political left, particularly in Hollywood, has drifted quite far from what many would call reality, and they’ve recently latched onto the term “fascism.” Anything that falls outside their progressive beliefs is, according to them, essentially labeled as fascistic. This term has been thrown around so much that it’s nearly lost its meaning. Celebrities, in particular, appear to be some of the biggest offenders; their self-righteousness often blinds them to contradicting evidence, and they seem intent on splitting their audience based on political lines.

For instance, take Elizabeth Banks. She’s known for her advocacy of left-leaning politics within the entertainment world. In a recent interview, she displayed a rather striking lack of awareness. Banks, who portrayed “Effie” in the “Hunger Games” films, noted that many white women regretted their voting choices in the last election—suggesting she turns to her fictional character for guidance.

Her Take on Voting Choices

In a chat with Bustle, Banks compared her character Effie to the contemporary battle against what she describes as a “fascist regime” in America. She mentioned, “Effie has one of the best arcs of any character I’ve ever played because she initially supports this fascist regime from which she gains benefits. It’s only later that she starts to recognize how unfair things are.” In her view, Effie’s transformation into a revolutionary figure is something to aspire to, and she expressed confusion over why 53% of white women didn’t vote for Kamala Harris.

Seriously, is this where we are? I mean, this comparison is ludicrous. Equating Donald Trump to a figure like Capitol Hill from “The Hunger Games”? It’s a stretch. In this context, it seems that fascism has become a catch-all for anything associated with enforced immigration laws. And let’s not forget, Kamala Harris was part of an administration that pushed several contentious policies. In their quest to oust Trump, Democrats essentially sidestepped democracy by maneuvering Harris into the nominee position when Biden’s campaign faltered after a less-than-stellar debate performance.

It’s exhausting to keep up with this line of thinking. Banks has a long history of supporting the Democratic party, and it raises the question—does she ever address how women might actually prosper under the “fascist regime” she describes? Unlikely. As for whether this will ever make sense or change? I think we know the answer to that too.
