Ella Langley’s Southern Baptist Upbringing
Ella Langley, a 26-year-old country music artist, recently reflected on her childhood in a small Alabama town during an interview on the podcast *Last Weekend with Theo Fung*. She described a particularly haunting experience in what she referred to as a “judgment house” at her church.
“It’s kind of like what we do around Halloween,” Langley explained. “I think it’s like a haunted house for Christians. It’s really intense. I remember the youth group took us there, and inside, you see a car accident scene. They try to convince you that you’re going to die the moment you step outside, so you’d better behave.”
This experience left a significant impact on her, she said, noting that many in her youth group felt compelled to raise their hands for prayer afterwards, as if they were seeking reassurance or “getting saved again.”
Homeschooling and Church Life
Langley elaborated on her upbringing, mentioning that she was homeschooled for many years. “Pretty much all we did was go to church,” she recalled. She described her church as a “really, really small” one, originating in a barn. “It started with hay bales. That’s where my dad and I grew up,” she said, adding that attending church was routine for her until she turned 18.
She drew an interesting comparison between her hometown experience and her rise to fame, noting, “You know all these people your whole life,” and once fame hits, “you just get used to it.” It’s almost like a small town atmosphere, just on a much larger scale.
Musical Journey
Langley began her career by sharing covers on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, which ultimately led to the release of her EP *Excuse the Mess* in 2023. This EP was pivotal in building her fan base and featured some early hits, including “If You Have To” and “Country Boys Dream Girl.” Her collaboration with Riley Green on “You Look Like You Love Me” brought her significant attention, becoming a viral hit on TikTok and gaining millions of streams.
In August 2024, she released her debut studio album, *The Hangover*, and a few months later, she was honored with the ACM New Female Artist of the Year Award by Miranda Lambert, who has since become a close friend.
Family Influence
Langley attributes her passion for music to her family, particularly highlighting her father and grandfather as great storytellers and musicians. “Storytelling has been in my family,” she noted, recalling how her grandfather could play instruments by ear. She also mentioned that singing in church was a significant part of her childhood, stating, “I learned how to read from singing hymns.” It seemed almost predetermined that she would pursue music, with her family fully supporting her aspirations.
Through her journey, from a small-town upbringing to rising star status, Langley’s story showcases the intertwining of faith, family, and passion.
