Ellen DeGeneres Supports Rosie O’Donnell Amid Trump Controversy
Ellen DeGeneres has voiced her support for Rosie O’Donnell following a controversial statement by President Donald Trump. Just a day after Trump implied he might revoke O’Donnell’s U.S. citizenship due to her move to Ireland earlier this year, DeGeneres took to Instagram to express her thoughts.
“Good for you,” DeGeneres, 67, commented while sharing Trump’s threat alongside O’Donnell’s lengthy response.
In his post, Trump labeled O’Donnell a “threat to humanity,” saying, “I am seriously considering taking away her citizenship because of the fact that Rosie O’Donnell is not in the greatest interests of our greatest nation.” He further stated that if she’s valued there, she should stay in Ireland, emphasizing, “God bless America!”
O’Donnell wasted no time responding to Trump. She shared a photo montage on Instagram that highlighted Trump’s posts, criticizing the president for his remarks. “The U.S. President always hated the fact that I looked at him for who he was,” O’Donnell stated. “This is why I moved to Ireland. He is a dangerous, soulless man with dementia, lacking compassion and basic humanity.”
She made it clear she opposes everything Trump stands for, mentioning, “Millions of others will, too. You’re going to deport everyone who confronts your evil tendencies? What a bad joke.” O’Donnell has had a long-standing feud with Trump, reminding everyone of his character while criticizing him for misleading Americans during his time on “The Apprentice.”
Legal experts suggest that O’Donnell’s citizenship is safe, as the 14th Amendment protects the rights of those born in the U.S. Born in New York, O’Donnell’s citizenship cannot be easily revoked unless proven fraudulent, which is highly unlikely.
Earlier this year, O’Donnell explained that she had moved to Ireland just before Trump took office, partly for the well-being of her son, Clay. DeGeneres also recently relocated abroad with her wife, Portia de Rossi, although it’s been indicated that they don’t share a close relationship.
O’Donnell remarked that she was surprised to learn of DeGeneres’s departure, implying that she didn’t expect the former talk show host to engage politically. “I don’t want to fight another gay woman,” O’Donnell clarified, emphasizing a desire for unity among LGBTQ+ comedians.
While they may be different in many ways, O’Donnell insists there’s space for all queer comedians to support one another, especially given the current climate of hostility toward the community.
