Ellen DeGeneres Makes Permanent Move to the UK
Ellen DeGeneres, aged 67, and her wife, Portia de Rossi, left the United States last year. This move followed DeGeneres’s support for Donald Trump during the 2024 presidential election. Initially, they envisioned this as a part-time escape, but it turned into a more lasting change after Trump’s victory in November.
“We arrived the day before the election and woke up to a flurry of texts from friends, filled with crying emojis. I was like, ‘He’s in,'” she recounted. “That’s when we decided, ‘We’re staying here.’
Life in the Countryside
While DeGeneres keeps much of her life in the UK private, she shares glimpses of her rural routine on social media. “It’s absolutely stunning,” she said about their new home. “We’re not accustomed to this kind of scenery. The villages and towns have such charm; everything feels so peaceful. Overall, it’s so much better here—how animals are treated, how polite people are.”
Reflecting on her decision, she noted they moved in November, which wasn’t exactly ideal. Still, experiencing snow for the first time was something special for her. “We truly love it here.”
Support for Rosie O’Donnell
Recently, DeGeneres expressed solidarity with fellow comedian Rosie O’Donnell, who also left the U.S. after Trump’s election. Following Trump’s threat to revoke O’Donnell’s U.S. citizenship—after her relocation to Ireland—DeGeneres voiced her support on Instagram. “Good for you,” she said in response to O’Donnell’s comments regarding the situation.
Trump had labeled O’Donnell a “threat to humanity,” suggesting that her best interests lay outside the States. “I’m seriously thinking about taking away her citizenship,” he posted on his platform. O’Donnell swiftly reacted, posting a collage that highlighted Trump’s comments and adding her critique of the president’s character.
O’Donnell shared her thoughts on why she chose to move. “The president has always hated my perspective on him, and it’s clear his actions don’t align with compassion,” she wrote, describing him as a dangerous figure lacking basic humanity. Earlier this year, she admitted she was surprised at DeGeneres’s departure from the U.S., noting she wasn’t aware the comedian would engage in political discussions.
Despite their sometimes rocky history, O’Donnell emphasized she bears no ill will toward DeGeneres. “I don’t want to clash with another gay woman,” she remarked, expressing her best wishes for DeGeneres. It’s clear that while their paths have diverged, there’s a measure of respect amidst their differences.
