Tech mogul Elon Musk announced Tuesday afternoon that he will be relocating the headquarters of both his social media company, X, and SpaceX to Texas in response to a new California law signed by Governor Gavin Newsom.
Musk made the announcement in two posts on the social media platform formerly known as Twitter at around 12:13 p.m. and 12:30 p.m., saying SpaceX would move its headquarters from Hawthorne to Starbase, Texas, and that X would move its headquarters from San Francisco to the tech hub of Austin.
“I’m tired of having to avoid gangs of violent drug addicts just to get to or from my building,” Musk added in another post, an apparent reference to the problems in the area surrounding X’s headquarters in New York’s Mid-Market Street neighborhood.
Musk said the “final straw” in his decision was a new California law that bars school districts from passing policies requiring schools to notify parents if a child wants to change their gender.
“I made it clear to Governor Newsom nearly a year ago that this type of law would force families and businesses to leave California to protect our children,” Musk wrote in another post on X.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott celebrated the move.
