Elon Musk Critiques AI Company Anthropic
This week, Elon Musk took to his social media platform, X, to publicly criticize AI competitor Anthropic, labeling the company’s AI models as “misanthropic and evil.” He expressed concerning views, stating that Anthropic’s AI shows bias against certain groups, saying it “dislikes white people and Asian people, especially Chinese people, straight people, and men.”
Musk’s comments surfaced following Anthropic’s announcement that it had secured a whopping $30 billion in funding, bringing its valuation to $380 billion. The company, co-founded by CEO Dario Amodei, is recognized for its Claude family of AI models.
In his post, Musk made bold allegations about the bias present in Anthropic’s AI, urging them to address these issues. He remarked, “Your AI hates white people and Asians, especially Chinese people, straight people, and men. It’s misanthropic and evil. Please fix it.”
The Tesla CEO further commented on the company’s foundational issues, suggesting that it was predestined to face such problems. “Honestly, I don’t believe there’s a way to sidestep the irony of humanity ultimately becoming misanthropic. You sealed your fate when you picked that name. The name of the wind,” he said.
His timing was interesting, especially given the competitive landscape of the AI sector. Musk’s own AI venture, xAI, along with its chatbot Grok, is in direct competition with Anthropic’s Claude model in this ever-expanding market.
Interestingly, this isn’t Musk’s first time criticizing Anthropic. Just last month, he reacted to news that the company had restricted xAI’s access to Claude’s models. In a post, Musk noted the competitive nature of the industry while addressing programming capabilities. He expressed, “We’re still not great at programming, but we excel in other areas. Anthropic has really achieved something with coding. Their decision to cut us off was a strong motivator for us—it may not bode well for their karma.”
Musk has also poked fun at the company’s name, suggesting that it ironically embodies elements of misanthropy, which he referenced in a previous post. “It’s always interesting to consider that fate enjoys irony. Quite ironic, indeed, for a company to be named Anthropic!”
The recent funding round that Anthropic completed is one of the largest in the tech sector to date, ranking just behind OpenAI, signaling robust investments in AI development.
The back-and-forth between Musk and Anthropic mirrors his ongoing tensions with OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman. Recently, Musk responded on X to claims about ChatGPT being connected to various unfortunate incidents, warning people to keep their loved ones away from using it. Altman countered by criticising Musk’s Tesla Autopilot technology, indicating the personal rivalry between them.
Anthropic emphasizes safety and responsible AI development. The significant funding it has received showcases considerable investor trust in its technology and approach.
Meanwhile, discussions about AI bias and strategies for conservatives to combat it have gained traction, particularly highlighted in an upcoming book by Winton Hall of Breitbart News. The book addresses significant issues surrounding AI’s influence on society and offers a conservative perspective on navigating these challenges.
As AI continues to evolve, debates about its implications are becoming more urgent. It could reshape many aspects of life, from employment to national security, and it’s a conversation that appears far from over.
