Elon Musk polls X users on ending daylight saving time

Billionaire Elon Musk voted for users of his social media platform X about how he wanted to approach Daylight Saving Time (DST).

Masks wrote in a post on Wednesday, “If you want to save summer time” [sic] The time will be cancelled, you will be “an hour before or after?”

About 58% of respondents said an hour later, while about 42% said an hour ago, with over 1.2 million users voting on Thursday morning. This means that respondents prefer permanent DST to stay on standard time all year round.

The mask poll highlighted the debate that has been simmering in the US in recent years. This is because lawmakers potentially end the twice-yearly tradition of “spring” watches to save sunlight and “spring” into “fallback” and adjusting to “spring” at standard times.

The United States standardized DST nationwide in 1966 using a unified timeline method. This changed the clock in spring and fall, and practiced in all states except Arizona and Hawaii, which opted out.

According to the National Congress of the National Assembly, even if 18 states have enacted laws that provide permanent DST, they will either move to the DST permanently or require legislative acts, even though 18 states have enacted laws that provide permanent DST.

In March 2022, the Senate passed the bill with unanimous consent that would save daylight savings forever if it became law. However, the Sunshine Protection Act was introduced by the Sen at the time. Marco Rubior-fla. , stuck in the House, several senators said they opposed the unanimous request for consent if they knew it was up for consideration – effectively blocking the bill.

Since then, lawmakers have introduced several bills aimed at making DST permanent or allowing states to make their own decisions independent of legislative legislation. Other measures at the state level propose to make standard time permanent by terminating the DST.

The Parliamentary Research Service (CRS) report points out that some studies have been conducted on some of the effects of clock changes and the beneficial and negative effects of DST and standard time.

A 1975 report by the National Standards Agency (NBS) found that there were no significant energy savings or differences in traffic asylum. Although statistically significant evidence of a fatal increase among school-age children between January and April 1974 was found, NBS looked at the month individually and noted that there was no difference between March and April when DST was temporarily enabled compared to the same non-DST period in the previous year.

CRS said that other studies found that the effect of DST on crashes was not statistically significant, and that although some studies have inconsistent short-term data, the long-term effects of DST could suggest a positive effect when there are fewer accidents. He added that the long-term outcomes could be “because of factors other than light.”

In 2008, the Ministry of Energy studied the impact of expansion on energy consumption, finding it corresponded to a 0.03% decline in electricity consumption. The agency said there was insufficient evidence to determine whether DST has an expanded DST having a measurable impact on gas consumption or vehicle traffic.

Several studies review the potential health effects of sep-annual clock changes. A 2013 study found evidence that “we found consistent with previous trends that round-trip to and from DST may be associated with a temporary increase. [acute myocardial infarction, or heart attack]respectively. “

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommended that the US move to fixed hours throughout the year in 2020, writing that “current evidence supports the adoption of standard time for the year, providing the best alignment with human circadian biology, and providing clear benefits for public health and safety.”
