Elon Musk commented on Monday about Tesla’s postponed robotaxi launch event.
“We asked for some significant design changes at the front, and now we have some extra time to show you some other things,” the electric vehicle (EV) maker’s CEO said on X.
Just a few days ago, Bloomberg reports Tesla has signaled it has decided to postpone its robot taxi event from its originally scheduled date of August 8th.

Tesla had previously hinted that the highly anticipated event among investors would feature a custom-designed Cybercab and announce other details of its autonomous robotaxi plans.
Tesla’s second-quarter deliveries beat expectations
Anonymous sources told Bloomberg that newly requested design changes and prototype production led to Tesla’s decision to delay the unveiling, which could take place in October, according to reports.
In an X post on July 13, the day Tesla held its 2024 annual shareholder meeting, the EV maker teased that “further details” about robotaxis would be announced “later this summer,” but did not specify a date.

The post included a photo of what appeared to be a “call” button for the ride-hailing feature that Tesla announced in April would eventually be integrated into its app.

“There will be a certain number of cars that are owned and operated by Tesla,” Musk said of Tesla’s envisioned self-driving ride-hailing service during the electric vehicle maker’s first-quarter earnings call in April. “There will be a certain number of cars, and then there will be a number of cars that are owned by end users.”

Musk explained at the time that users can “add or remove their cars from their fleet at any time” and “decide if they want their cars to be available only to friends and family, only to five-star users, or available to anyone at any time,” and then recall them again for personal use.

According to Tesla’s first-quarter shareholder presentation, the custom-built Cybercab will use a “revolutionary ‘unboxed’ manufacturing strategy.”

When Tesla’s robotaxi service eventually debuts, it will likely compete with ride-hailing companies like Uber and Lyft.
Both Musk and Tesla said they believe the world is moving toward an “electric” and “self-driving future.”
