Elon Musk recently commented on a bill highlighted by Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson that seeks to ensure that only American citizens can vote in federal elections.

The SAVE Act “amends the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 (commonly known as the ‘Motor Voter Act’) to require states to obtain proof of citizenship before anyone can register to vote. It also requires states to remove non-citizens from existing voter rolls.” Daily Signals According to reports.
“Speaker Johnson, Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), and Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) held a press conference to announce the introduction of the Protecting American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act in the midst of the worst border crisis in American history…” Johnson’s official website reads.
Co-sponsors of the SAVE Act include Senators Kevin Cramer (R-TX), Ted Cruz (R-TX), Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), Roger Marshall (R-KS), Ted Budd (R-KS), John Kennedy (R-LA), and Rick Scott (R-FL).
Musk called opponents of the bill “traitors” and posed the hypothetical question of what the punishment for treason in the United States would be.
“Anyone who disagrees is a traitor. I mean, with a capital letter, a traitor,” Musk said. “What’s the punishment for traitors?”
According to the United States Constitution, those who commit treason are punished by death or imprisonment for at least five years, are barred from holding public office in the United States, and face a minimum fine of $10,000.
Congress is scheduled to reconvene in Washington, DC on Monday.
The timing of this month’s vote is notable because it comes less than six months before both President Trump and President Biden are up for re-election to the White House.
Democrats who oppose the SAVE Act argue that the bill is unnecessary because it is already illegal for foreign nationals to vote in federal elections.
