Elon Musk’s Xai Chatbot Grok Gets a Controversial Upgrade
Elon Musk’s Xai Chatbot, Grok, has recently received a “spicy” upgrade, according to reports.
The new AI tool, Grok Imagine, was launched on Monday. It’s designed to create short video clips, one of which features Taylor Swift in a striking silver dress, though some might find the portrayal quite revealing. The Verge shared insights about the upgrade, noting the provocative nature of the content.
Interestingly, there seems to be a bit of discomfort around the feature. For instance, while at a music festival celebrating Swift, I found myself reminded of the more explicit nature of the clip produced, which was somewhat frustrating.
The Verge did post the video but took precautions by covering Swift’s chest with a black bar.
There’s a growing concern about the absence of proper safeguards against the potential for creating unsettling deepfakes or adult content. As noted, it feels like a legal challenge is on the horizon.
Efforts to contact Musk, Zai, and Swift’s representatives regarding this issue were made but met with silence.
Swift has become a frequent target for explicit, AI-generated content across multiple platforms. Earlier this year, images of her circulated widely on sites like X and 4Chan, leading to public outrage and calls for immediate content removal.
The issue escalated with videos that depicted her in decidedly inappropriate political and sexual contexts, which understandably raised alarms.
This controversy has spurred discussions around implementing stricter content regulations, prompting Swift to consider possible legal action. Meanwhile, U.S. lawmakers are pushing for new bipartisan legislation aimed at criminalizing non-consensual deepfake pornography.
Regarding user guidelines, Musk has stated that the platform will prohibit generating pornographic depictions of real individuals. Despite this, Grok Imagine—available to premium users—allows for the creation of AI-generated video clips up to 15 seconds long, featuring different styles, including the controversial “spicy” mode.
According to Musk, the user engagement has been intense, with more than 34 million images created since the feature’s launch. Yet, he has notably avoided addressing the challenges of content moderation that have arisen alongside such growth.
It seems like the recent debates surrounding this launch could unfold in unexpected ways for Xai, given its previous associations with deepfake content aimed at Swift.
Deepfakes, for clarification, are a form of synthetic media that leverages AI to convincingly mimic human traits and voices.
