Elton John Criticizes UK Government for ‘Criminal’ Plan to Exempt Tech Companies from Copyright Law

Sir Elton John Criticizes UK Government’s AI Copyright Plans

Sir Elton John has expressed strong disapproval of the current British Labour government, labeling them as “absolute losers.” He feels “incredibly betrayed” by their intention to allow technology companies to bypass copyright laws affecting artists.

In an interview on the BBC, he voiced his concerns about proposals that would enable artificial intelligence companies to use artists’ work without compensation, describing such actions as theft on a grand scale. He highlighted the potential harm this could cause to young artists who may lack the resources to combat large tech firms.

Reports indicate that Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s administration is set to reject a Senate proposal that would require AI companies to disclose the material they utilize in their programs. A government spokesperson mentioned that there would be “no change” to copyright laws, implying that creators should be content with their current arrangements.

“It’s criminal, and I feel incredibly betrayed,” Sir Elton remarked. He recounted that the Senate had voted overwhelmingly in favor of the proposal, but the government seemed dismissive, treating it as if it were insignificant.

He went on to criticize Technology Secretary Peter Kyle, stating that if the government doesn’t amend their plans, he might pursue legal action. Recent analyses have suggested that Kyle has been maintaining close ties with major tech companies following Labour’s election victory last July.

Sir Elton cautioned that the government’s stance could deprive younger generations of their rightful earnings and legacy, reiterating his disappointment and anger over the situation.
