Emails Reveal Epstein's Attorney Discussing Gospel With Him Months Prior to His Death

Ken Starr’s Influence on Jeffrey Epstein’s Views on Christianity

Lawyer Ken Starr was encouraging Jeffrey Epstein to explore Christianity shortly before the infamous financier’s death in prison, as revealed through emails. In a meeting back in November 2018, Starr, who previously served as president of Baylor University and played a role in negotiating a lenient plea deal for Epstein in 2007, listened as Epstein criticized Christian prayers of repentance, likening them to “forced speech,” according to documents from the Department of Justice. Just nine months after this meeting, Epstein was found dead in his New York jail cell, having been charged with federal sex trafficking offenses. Starr passed away in September 2022 due to complications following surgery.

During their conversation, Epstein expressed skepticism, stating, “Having to accept Christ seems like, in your words, ‘coercion of speech’… forced admission of faith.” To this, Starr responded, appreciating the point made by Epstein: “At a basic level, acceptance of Christ must be voluntary. This is an invitation.” He emphasized the need for this acceptance to come freely, rather than through some form of coercion.

Epstein, not one to back down, quoted the Epistle to the Romans: “For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved,” and layered on his interpretation, suggesting that such expressions felt scripted to him. Starr acknowledged Epstein’s perspective but reminded him of the unpredictability of faith’s outcomes, referencing Billy Graham’s belief that outcomes are not preordained by belief.

In another exchange, Epstein complimented Starr, remarking on his intellect but picked apart the nuance in his comments. He pointed out what he perceived as logical discrepancies in the presented arguments regarding faith and outcomes.

These emails shed light on Epstein’s contentious views on faith. For instance, former Trump advisor Steve Bannon suggested that Epstein could learn a thing or two from Starr during their future meetings. Additionally, Epstein had previously mocked philanthropist Bill Gates, dismissing his belief in the equality of all lives as a “ridiculous statement,” further portraying his strong opinions on social issues.

Starr, in response to Epstein’s complicated thoughts, mentioned, “Let’s discuss this with Steve,” hinting at a willingness to further delve into the heavy theological discussions they were navigating.

The dynamic between Epstein and Bannon has sparked conversations, although Bannon was not implicated in any wrongdoing associated with Epstein. Some have even called for special investigations related to Epstein’s case.
