The Northern California emergency crew rescued a 16-year-old boy who fell over a 50-foot deep mine shaft while exploring the sides of the mountain.
The teenager and his friends had plunged into a horizontal mine shaft about 180 feet into the side of the mountain last week, officials said. They used household ropes to hang up about 40-50 feet below the vertical shaft, but were not sturdy enough for climbing.
One rope broke and the 16-year-old plunged about 30 feet to the bottom of the mine shaft. He tried to close his way freely, but continued to use up his strength and lose grip, officials said.
Rescue squads rushed to rescue the teens, with a lightweight, complex rope system and air surveillance mechanism. They rappelled on him and used the harness to bring him back to safety.
The teen was taken to a local trauma centre for evaluation and treatment after his brief lockdown, officials said.
“The incident highlights an unprecedented, unique natural disaster in the beautiful and sturdy landscapes of Placer County,” county officials said.
Hidden mine shafts and sinkholes tend to reappear in the most unfortunate ways, usually by swallowing ignorant amblers.
In late December, a 40 x 40-foot sinkhole suddenly consumed a mass of I-80 in New Jersey. Just in time to make Christianity and pre-New Year traffic worse than normal.
In the same month, a Pennsylvania grandma took her 30-foot nose into a sinkhole while searching for a lost cat. Her body was found in a sinkhole and after a few days of searching, it was opened above an abandoned coal mine.
