Emma Navarro dislikes being called a 'billionaire's daughter'

Emma Navarro’s Rising Tennis Career

Emma Navarro is gaining recognition in the tennis world, but she pushes back against certain labels.

Reflecting on her journey to becoming the No. 10 female tennis player globally, Navarro feels that the title of “billionaire daughter” doesn’t quite capture her experience or the hard work she has put in.

In an interview with Tatler prior to Wimbledon, she expressed her discomfort with that description. Along with her father, Ben Navarro, who is the billionaire founder and CEO of Sherman Financial Group, she stated, “I really don’t like the description.”

“I’ve never read anything,” said Navarro, who clinched the 2021 NCAA Singles Championship while studying in Virginia. “I don’t read comments or articles. I don’t know what fans are saying. They mention my father’s status, which is fine, but I didn’t grow up through any sort of privilege that was handed to me.”

“We had a pretty traditional upbringing. Saturdays started at 6 a.m., playing tennis. We learned the values of hard work and intentional living,” she added.

Ben Navarro, at 62 years old, boasts a net worth of $4.8 billion and established Sherman Financial Group in 1998. Although he attempted to buy the Carolina Panthers in 2018, he ultimately lost out to David Tepper.

Other players, too, have spoken about the perceptions of wealth in tennis. Jessica Pegula, for instance, also highlights how these assumptions can shape opinions about them.

Navarro humorously reflected on some of the misconceptions surrounding her life: “People think I have a butler, or a driver, or a private limousine. It’s funny what people assume.”

Originally from New York City, Navarro had a standout year in 2024, making it to the Wimbledon quarter-finals and reaching the US Open semi-finals, where she was defeated by Aryna Sabalenka, the then No. 2 player. She also reached the quarter-finals at the Australian Open, but faced an earlier exit at the French Open. Most recently, she secured her spot in the third round of Wimbledon after defeating Veronica Kudermetova in straight sets.
