Emma Heming Willis Responds to Critics About Bruce Willis’ Condition

Emma Heming Willis has defended herself against intense public scrutiny after being candid about her husband Bruce Willis’ frontotemporal dementia (FTD).

In a recent social media video posted on August 29, Emma, who is 47, addressed some of the reactions she received following an interview with Diane Sawyer for an ABC News special titled “Emma and Bruce Willis: An Unexpected Journey.”

During this special, Emma revealed that Bruce, now 70, resides in a separate home for his safety and ongoing treatment.

Emma Discusses the Difficult Decision Around Bruce’s Care

She described the decision to separate homes as part of their ongoing effort to manage Bruce’s condition.

“I think they did a beautiful job amplifying their perceptions of FTD and highlighting caregivers,” Emma commented. “By sharing some of our intimate information, I anticipated we might see two camps form.” She continued, “It’s something caregivers face—judgment and criticism from others.”

In her video, Emma referenced a segment from her book, *The Expected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Self-Finding Caregiving.* After reviewing her special, she quoted, “Everyone will have an opinion, but you need to remember that most people lack direct experience with this.” She noted, “If they don’t have that experience, perhaps they shouldn’t comment.”

Emma’s Thoughts on Opinions and Experience

“Nothing can change your perspective more than personal experience,” she quoted from a therapist’s advice. “Even if someone is familiar with dementia, they aren’t privy to the inner workings of your home or family dynamics,” she emphasized.

Emma pointed out the volume of unsolicited opinions she has received. “The truth is… the opinions can be overwhelming. If they don’t have this experience, they shouldn’t really have a say—but they certainly don’t deserve a vote,” she affirmed.

Despite the backlash, Emma elaborated on why she chooses to keep sharing updates about Bruce’s health. “While being open may invite criticism, what truly matters is creating connections and validation among those navigating the caregiving landscape daily,” she explained. “I do this to connect deeper with a community that understands this journey.”

Recognizing Warning Signs Before the Diagnosis

<pIn the interview special, Emma reflected on the “surprising” warning signs she observed, such as changes in Bruce’s once-friendly demeanor, a lack of interest in his usual pursuits, and avoiding family activities.

In March 2022, it was announced that Bruce was taking a break from acting due to a diagnosis of aphasia. Subsequently, it was confirmed that he has been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD).

FTD results from damage to neurons in the brain’s frontal and temporal lobes, leading to various symptoms, including abnormal behavior, communication issues, and emotional problems, as noted by the National Institute of Aging.
