Dallas Cowboys Struggling to Return to Glory Days

It’s been over three decades since the Dallas Cowboys last appeared in the NFC Championship Game. January marked the 30th anniversary of that last game, and despite various attempts, the team just can’t seem to break out of this rut.

This situation is a stark contrast to the franchise’s heyday, when Emmitt Smith dominated the field. Although he’s been off the grid for a while, he has some thoughts on what’s keeping the team from reclaiming its former glory.

“I think if there’s anything that held us back, we moved away from the things that really helped build this organization in the first place,” Smith stated in a recent conversation. He noted that both Jimmie Johnson and Jerry Jones brought immense passion to their vision of winning a Super Bowl, which was always the ultimate objective.

According to Smith, building that successful team involved sacrifices and key decisions. They made bold moves, trading players and bringing in fresh talent, essentially rebuilding the organization in a flash. They quickly moved past obstacles, blending passion with strategy. “That’s the blueprint for this organization moving forward,” he added. “That’s what defines us.”

Smith also implied that the Cowboys might be missing a certain toughness. “When you think about the Pittsburgh Steelers, you know toughness is part of their identity,” he explained. “That’s what the Cowboys should embody as well.” Drawing comparisons to the San Francisco 49ers and New England Patriots, he underscored the importance of having a strong foundation within the organization.

“There’s a core that made a team great. Once an organization strays from that, it takes a long time to reconnect,” he said. In his view, that’s the heart of the Cowboys’ current challenges. “Forget about financial success; if you haven’t accomplished anything in 30 years, getting back to that greatness is what matters most.”

Last season raised questions about the Cowboys’ defense, particularly after they traded Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers. Since that trade, they’ve seen a troubling trend, allowing an average of 30.1 points per game and finishing with a 7-9-1 record.

As the team navigates contract disputes and expectations, they continue to seek that elusive return to form.
