The Silence of Hollywood at the Emmy Awards
The glamorous world of Hollywood seemed remarkably quiet regarding the assassination of Charlie Kirk during the 77th Emmy Awards.
During the three-hour live broadcast from the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, politics took a backseat, almost completely absent from the festivities.
Hanna Einbinder, who won an Emmy for her role in hack, ended her acceptance speech with a bold declaration: “Fuck Ice and Free Palestine!”
Another actress from the show, Megan Starter, echoed this sentiment by carrying a bag that simply said “stop” on the Emmy’s Red Carpet.
According to reports, actor Javier Bardem, an Academy Award winner, made headlines by stating he would refuse to collaborate with companies that support Israel amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
While on the red carpet, Bardem remarked, “If you find a company that has business with Israel, what would you do?”
He firmly stated, “I won’t work. I can’t do it with anyone who justifies or supports genocide. I can’t. It’s just as easy. In this industry, we can’t do it.”
Presenter Brian Cranston humorously referenced President Donald Trump’s comments about the actor, describing him as “a devastating awakened degenerate like Tom Hanks.”
Meanwhile, Stephen Colbert seemed more interested in discussing his own accolades rather than the tragic murder of Charlie Kirk, while many lamented the loss of a champion for free speech.
After winning the Emmy for Best Talk Series, Colbert reflected on the past, recalling a meeting with Spike Jonze in September 2015. He humorously quoted, “Hey, what is this show?” His response was a bit unclear, but he expressed a commitment to late-night comedy themed around love.
Looking back ten years later, he remarked, “I have never loved my country more desperately. God bless America.”
