In a recent exchange, former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom countered remarks made by Minnesota Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve, who suggested that discussions about transgender athletes could reflect a broader agenda against transgender individuals. Freedom took to social media on Saturday to challenge Reeve’s view on those advocating to restrict biological males from competing in women’s sports.
“Cheryl Reeve should resign immediately. You can’t effectively lead women’s basketball if you won’t defend women’s sports. It is not an attack on anyone’s existence to protect these sports. If you genuinely believe that, then prove it by drafting me in the 2027 WNBA Draft,” he stated.
Reeve expressed her thoughts after the Lynx recently concluded the regular season with a win against the Indiana Fever. Outside the venue, demonstrations on both sides of the transgender sports participation debate took place.
Reeve shared, “This is perhaps one of the most significant aspects of the season for me. The transgender community deserves support, and the ongoing issues regarding transgender individuals in sports reflect a broader attack on their existence.”
Speaking on her decision to wear a “Trans Kids Belong” shirt during an earlier game, Reeve recounted the positive feedback she received as a touching moment in her season. She believes that even such small gestures can make a considerable difference, fostering visibility and support for the community.
Reeve indicated this is not her first discussion of the transgender issue this season. Initially, she shared her thoughts following Supreme Court rulings that upheld laws protecting women’s and girls’ sports. Additionally, while defending transgender participation, she underscored the complexity of eligibility once puberty occurs.
Before an August match, she had a private conversation with Fever guard Sophie Cunningham, who has voiced concerns about biological males participating in women’s sports yet insists she does not harbor ill feelings toward transgender individuals. Cunningham said, “I want to show love, but I also believe in being honest about protecting young girls in sports.”
Freedom stirred the WNBA’s transgender debate in August when he declared his intention to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft under the name “Enisa Freedom.” His goal was to assess the league’s eligibility standards, which specify women as eligible players but do not explicitly define gender through biological terms.
Freedom emphasized that he aims to address the topic thoughtfully, not to demean anyone. “I’m not here to mock or belittle any group. This is about something bigger, beyond mere attention,” he articulated.
In contrast, former NBA player Royce White reacted to Reeve’s statements with satire, creating an alter ego named “Roysha” to bridge cultural divides, suggesting that it could attract conservative supporters of the WNBA.
The WNBA commented that it hasn’t encountered immediate transgender eligibility issues and criticized efforts to undermine others. While its collective bargaining agreement emphasizes that only female players are eligible, it lacks a specific definition based on biology. Commissioner Cathy Engelbert noted that the league would continue to prioritize fairness, competitive integrity, and inclusion in discussions with team leaders and the players’ union.
