England v Republic of Ireland: Euro 2025 qualifying – live | Women’s Euro 2025 qualifiers

This is a lovely team goal. Walsh and Stanway combine crisply to shuttle the ball in from the right flank. Mead takes up possession in the pocket, and wedges a delightful defence-splitting dink down the inside-right channel to release Russo, who rounds Brosnan on the outside before slotting.

If they win tonight – which they should, against an Irish team yet to find the net, never mind earn a point, in four matches – victory in Sweden next Tuesday will guarantee them a spot in the finals. Should the French beat the Swedes in Dijon this evening, a point will do for the Lionesses in Gothenburg next week. But fail to do that, and it’s the play-offs for England. First things first, though, and that’s this evening’s showdown with the Republic of Ireland in Norwich. “We want to control the game a little more than we did the last time we played against them,” says Wiegman, ominous news for the visitors, who were dispatched efficiently enough in Dublin back in April, though Ireland’s Aoife Mannion, fresh from winning the FA Cup with Manchester United, counters: “We don’t want to concede and we want to pick up a result.” Kick-off is at 8pm BST. It’s on!

Important Events

Goals! England 1-0 Ireland (Russo 5)

It’s a great team goal. Walsh and Stanway work together to get the ball moving crisply down the right wing. Mead wins the ball in the pocket and makes a brilliant pass into the right channel, splitting the defence, before feeding Russo, who slots it past Brosnan on the outside and into the goal.

3 minutes: A long ball down the left flank for Ireland, Barrett chases it down. There’s a lot of space there, and Mannion, free in the middle, finds the ball, but Barrett times her run wrong and the flag comes up for offside. She throws her head back, frustrated with herself.

2 min: Williamson played a great long diagonal pass to Le Tissier on the right, but there was no one to find in the middle, forcing the England right-back to run. What a shame. Williamson’s pass could have been an assist, but what a great assist it was.

Players from both teams will take a knee in a sign of equality, love and respect before England start the match. The rain continues to fall.

The team is out! The sellout crowd at Carrow Road cheers as both teams take to the pitch. The atmosphere more than makes up for a dreary, rainy Norfolk night. England is white, Ireland is green. The national anthems are sung, the coin is tossed, the greetings are exchanged and the match begins.

England manager Sarina Wiegman spoke to ITV. “Maya Le Tissier is fit and performing very well in the training sessions and we have been working on her for the last few weeks…she has shown a lot of good things…we think now is the right time…Jess Park has to be really open in the pocket…create something in the opposition’s half of the pitch…we have to influence our attacking game…we can’t let our guard down…this group is really tough…it’s a very important game and Tuesday is no different…it’s very close…Ireland are in good form…we played very well against them in the first half…we scored two goals and probably could have scored a few more…but in the second half they really came at us and had very good chances…we struggled a bit with that…so we really want to get out of that and have good control of the ball.”

Recent results have not been in the Republic’s favor either. England’s home record in the group hasn’t been great so far (the aforementioned draw with Sweden and loss to France), but they have still won six of their last eight games. Meanwhile, Ireland have shockingly lost five in a row and haven’t scored a goal all year – a significant drop from their six straight wins in 2023 that saw them win 20 matches and lose just two, earning them promotion to League A in the Nations League.

Here’s what happened when the two teams met in Dublin in April.

It was the latest in a historic run of defeats for Ireland that doesn’t bode well for them. In five of the five games officially recognised by UEFA, Ireland have conceded 19 goals and failed to score once. On the bright side, Eileen Gleeson’s side have a chance to write a new chapter in history tonight.

England made three changes to the starting 11 that beat France 2-1 in Saint-Etienne last month. Alex Greenwood, Jess Park and Maya Le Tissier all played, while Lucy Bronze, Millie Bright and Ella Toone were on the bench.

Ireland made five changes to their starting eleven following the 1-0 defeat in Sweden. Denise O’Sullivan, Niamh Fahey, Amber Barrett, Anna Patten and Emily Murphy were in action, with Louise Quinn, Megan Connolly and Leanne Kiernan on the bench, Kayla Calusa injured and captain Katie McCabe suspended, with O’Sullivan taking the armband that McCabe normally wears.

preamble

Reigning European champions England are struggling to enjoy their usual dominant form in Group A3 qualifiers, who will face the right to defend the trophy in Switzerland next summer. They are currently third in the group…

  • France P4 W3 D0 L1 F5 A3 Point 9

  • Sweden P4 W2 D1 L1 F5 A2 Points 7

  • England P4 W2 D1 L1 F4 A2 Points 7

  • Republic of Ireland P4 W0 D0 L4 F0 A7 Pts 0

… They got off to a poor start – drawing with Sweden at Wembley and losing to France in Newcastle – and now trail Sweden on goal difference, but Sarina Wiegman’s team bounced back with a comeback win at Saint-Etienne last month and now their fate is in their own hands.

A win tonight – they are yet to score or even score a point against an Irish team in four games – and a win in Sweden next Tuesday will guarantee them a place in the final. If France beat Sweden in Dijon tonight, a point for them in Gothenburg next week would be enough. But if they fail to do so, England will progress to the play-offs. But first they face the Republic of Ireland tonight in Norwich. “We want to control the game a bit more than we did the last time we played them,” says Wiegman, but that’s ominous news for the visitors, who were beaten quite efficiently in Dublin in April. But Ireland’s Aoife Mannion, fresh from winning the FA Cup with Manchester United, counters: “We don’t want to concede goals and we want to get a result.” Kick-off is at 8pm BST. started!
