England's players change the World Cup story with victory against Panama

This might ease some of the anxiety among England fans who are eager for the Three Lions to clinch the World Cup title after a 60-year wait.

Manager Thomas Tuchel faced scrutiny regarding his selections after England’s recent goalless draw with Ghana. Yet, there was still a capable squad prepared for the upcoming match against Panama, particularly after a rather uninspiring first half.

Fortunately, Jude Bellingham, one of the standout players for England, turned things around with a clever flick, and just four minutes later, Harry Kane cemented a 2-0 victory, wrapping up the group stage positively.

Interestingly, this final group match echoed their World Cup opener against Croatia. The team struggled to find their rhythm in the early part of the game, but managed to find its stride in the second half.

Entering Saturday’s match, England was favored to top Group L. Still, unease began to set in after fellow group member Croatia took a 1-0 lead over Ghana. This situation risked dropping the Three Lions to second place, complicating their chances for knockout advancement.

Fortunately, England secured both the win and the top spot in the group, moving on to face a qualifying team.

The quest for World Cup glory has been on pause for years now.

In 2022, England reached the quarter-finals, but finished fourth four years prior. This year’s pressure has been significant for Tuchel and his team, especially after Reece James’s injury during the Ghana match, which raised questions heading into future games.

Once again, doubts surfaced about Tuchel’s decision to exclude players like Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, and Trent Alexander-Arnold from the World Cup squad.

Tuchel commented, “It’s instinct. When things go poorly, players on the bench seem to become the ‘winners’, and those not selected gain a sort of victory. But the game needs to unfold as it does. [Against Ghana] it was tough; they created numerous challenges for us. Our choices were based on the evidence we had at the time. It’s not feasible to suddenly turn to players who weren’t chosen and expect them to be the solution.”

In the match against Panama, Jarrell Quansah stepped in for James at the right back position.

England hopes to see James return during the tournament, though Tuchel wasn’t certain about the timeline.

Bellingham broke the stalemate with a goal from a corner kick in the 62nd minute. Positioning himself cleverly in front of the net, he executed a flick from Bukayo Saka to score England’s first goal.

Once again, Bellingham made an impact, with Kane assisting on a header for a two-goal lead, nearly achieving a shutout. This marked Kane as England’s all-time leading scorer in World Cup history.
