EPA’s Zeldin demands end to Mexican sewage flooding across border

WASHINGTON – The Trump administration is tackling different border flows after illegal intersections plunge to record lows.

Environmental Protection Agency administrator Lee Zeldin embarked on Monday on a mission to stop the flow of Mexico’s sewage from Tijuana to the US.

“The EPA will stand on the border with Mexico,” Zeldin told reporters Monday before flying to San Diego.

“There is raw sewage that has been travelling across the border for decades, and Americans are very concerned about beach closures, degradation of the Tijuana River valley, public health and air quality concerns,” Zeldin said.

“It’s been going on for so long, and we need to urgently and deliberately pursue and implement solutions that will end this forever. That’s our key focus.”

Zeldin will meet with Mexican Environment Secretary Alicia Barcena on Tuesday, then highlighting the impact on local military operations.

“We’ll visit with Navy seals. Their training was affected. Navy seals have become sick,” he said.

“I will visit local wastewater treatment facilities, attend roundtables with local stakeholders and elected officials, and perhaps on a helicopter tour of the southern border,” Zeldin added.

“This needs to be over. There’s nothing more important than dealing with this very important public health and environmental crisis tomorrow than the California border.”

The sewage flow to the United States is caused by inadequate infrastructure south of the border. This is an issue that can take time and take time to fix.
