Eric Adams: Gen Z supporters of Mamdani's NYC mayoral campaign are 'rude,' America-hating extremists influenced by the far left

A significant portion of Gen Z voters appears to be backing Zhoran Mamdani, the socialist frontrunner for mayor in New York, which has led some critics to suggest they’ve been heavily influenced by leftist ideologies.

Mayor Eric Adams expressed his concern during a recent interview, noting, “I’ve never seen such an angry and hostile election season. While not all of Zoran’s supporters fit this mold, there’s definitely a distinct group.” He shared his discomfort with the increasingly aggressive behavior he witnesses, saying, “When you’re out with your family at a restaurant, and someone suddenly yells a curse or insult… it’s alarming.”

Adams lamented the decline in civility, recounting experiences where people openly insult him, even in front of children, which he feels reflects a growing trend of disrespect within the city. “When you act that way in front of kids, it’s concerning. It shows a lack of regard for the kind of decency we should uphold in a city of this size,” he added.

The mayor criticized the educational system and universities, suggesting they foster a culture that pushes young people towards radical ideologies. “We’re seeing our children become increasingly radicalized, and it’s troubling that not enough people are willing to address it,” he stated.

He expressed worry that this growing hostility is leading to a broader disdain for both the city and the country among young people. “It’s something we must confront,” Adams said. He acknowledged that while many youths are achieving great things, there is still a concerning number being influenced negatively through various channels, including school environments and social networks.

Moreover, a moderate Democrat weighed in, indicating that this issue isn’t just New York-centric. In light of recent violent incidents involving political disagreements, he noted a troubling trend of aggression towards those with differing viewpoints.

“It’s unacceptable to target young individuals because of ideological differences,” he remarked, emphasizing the need for compassion and understanding.

Mamdani’s appeal to younger voters has been striking. According to a recent Marist University poll, he enjoys the support of 64% of potential voters in the 18 to 29 age range, while only 14% favor the Republican candidates, including Adams, gearing up for the general election set for November 4th.
