Concerns Over Texas District Changes and Future Elections
On Monday, former Attorney General Eric Holder expressed concerns that Texas’s district changes might influence the recognition of the upcoming 2028 presidential election, while overlooking crucial constitutional aspects.
Democrats in the Texas state legislature departed to Illinois and New York to obstruct special sessions aimed at discussing district modifications that could potentially add up to five seats for Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives. The owner mentioned in an interview with Symone Sanders-Townsend, co-host of “The Peeas Night,” that the implications of Texas’s district changes extend beyond the 2026 midterm elections.
“This isn’t just a Texas problem. Yes, Texas is in the spotlight. But it’s a national issue. We must recognize that if Republicans manage to maintain control of the House next year, it could impact who wins the presidential election in 2028,” Holder stated.
He further warned against reckless maneuvers, saying, “If we’re playing with fire here, and if partisan figures are put in place to manipulate districts, they might jeopardize the yardstick for determining the next president.”
It’s important to note that the 2028 presidential election results will be confirmed by members of the House of Representatives elected on January 6, 2029, after the election on November 7, 2028.
After the 2022 midterm elections, New York also restructured its congressional districts, resulting in a scenario where six of the eleven Republicans in the House faced significant risks to their re-election prospects.
