Heat’s Bam Adebayo Injured in Play-In Loss
After the Heat’s recent play-in game against the Hornets, coach Erik Spoelstra was visibly upset over the injury to Bam Adebayo. The star player hurt his back in the second quarter, following a tumble after tripping over LaMelo Ball just a minute into the period. Adebayo fell hard and couldn’t continue playing.
The incident unfolded when, after a drive to the basket, Ball lost the ball and accidentally caught Adebayo’s left ankle.
Spoelstra passionately criticized the referees, particularly calling out Curtis Blair and Zach Zarba, suggesting that Ball should have been ejected for the play. “This isn’t cute or funny; it’s a dangerous play,” he said, clearly frustrated. “It’s a shame our best player is out. We’re not making excuses. The Hornets played well and closed the game strong.”
He continued, “That shouldn’t be tolerated in the game. Curtis was right there—it’s his job to notice these things. If he didn’t see it, then Zack should have. Someone should’ve caught it. Ball deserved to be thrown out for that. I don’t know him personally, but such actions have no place in basketball.”
As the game progressed, the NBA announced they would review the situation, with insights from insider Chris Haynes indicating that a decision might be made before the Hornets’ next matchup on Friday.
Ball expressed regret after the game, saying, “I got hit in the head and wasn’t fully aware of what was happening. I’ll check on him to see if he’s alright.”
In a surprising turn, Ball ended up scoring the game-winning layup with just 4.7 seconds left in overtime, allowing the ninth-seeded Hornets to narrowly defeat Miami 127-126.
While Miami’s season has come to an end, the Hornets are set to face the loser of the upcoming 76ers vs. Magic game for the last Eastern Conference playoff spot.
The Heat struggled with their shooting throughout the game, with Adebayo managing just six points and three rebounds in his limited time on the court, while another player recorded 30 points alongside 10 assists and 5 rebounds.
