Chairman of Ethics and Religion Liberty Committee Resigns
The chairman of the Ethics and Religion Liberty Committee stepped down on Thursday, nearly two months after the committee narrowly avoided losing funding during the Southern Baptist Conference Annual Meeting.
Brent Leatherwood, who led the ERLC from 2021 to 2025, faced various efforts from critics aimed at his removal or to cut off business funds. Notably, the ERLC also survived funding cuts in 2024.
The ERLC serves as the official voice of the Southern Baptist framework on issues related to morality, society, and public policy.
“It was an honor to serve this Baptist organization and guide our convention church,” Leatherwood stated. “I think gratitude is essential to conservatism,” he added.
During his tenure, particularly throughout the Trump era, Leatherwood and his supporters defended against claims that the ERLC had veered leftward. At this year’s annual meeting, 57% of attendees voted against repaying the ERLC. If passed, a second vote would have been necessary in 2026. Interestingly, in 2024, Leatherwood had been both terminated and subsequently rehired in a series of surprising events involving the board.
In speaking about advocacy efforts, he noted the importance of balancing beliefs and kindness, emphasizing that it’s rooted in the Bible and reflects Baptist principles. “It’s about standing for the truth while recognizing the dignity of every individual,” he said, referencing 1 Peter 3:15-16 to highlight the mission of the ERLC.
Some achievements during Leatherwood’s leadership include:
- Leading initiatives to strengthen the parent-child relationship.
- Submitting an amicus brief to the Supreme Court defending children from harmful online content.
- Facilitating the placement of 40 ultrasound machines at pregnancy resource centers nationwide.
- Communicating policy priorities to Trump’s transition team, some of which were implemented.
- Issuing a statement from pro-Israel evangelicals following terrorist attacks on October 7, 2023.
Miles Marin, the ERLC’s Vice President and Chief of Staff, will act as president until a permanent replacement is selected.
“Brent has led the committee with great integrity, showing courage in today’s divisive culture,” remarked Councillor Scott Fossey. “Even amid challenges to biblical values, Brent served consistently and faithfully.”
