What Christians need to know about Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani
Addressing New York’s escalating “cost of living crisis” and enhancing street safety are key priorities for Zoran Mamdani, New York City’s incoming mayor, who emphasizes his commitment to the working class.
His campaign website features ambitious pledges, which include freezing skyrocketing rents, increasing affordable housing, and cracking down on negligent landlords by taking ownership of properties that fall into disrepair. He also suggests establishing a city-owned grocery store to help lower food prices, offering free bus fares, providing free childcare for children from birth to age six, taking serious action on climate change, improving education and healthcare systems while reducing associated costs, and simplifying the process of starting and running a business in the city.
On top of that, Mamdani vowed to raise New York’s minimum wage to $30 an hour by 2030, fortifying protections for undocumented immigrants and the LGBTQ+ community as part of his commitment to make the city a sanctuary for these groups. He plans to improve access to abortion and to give every newborn whose parents choose to keep them a “free baby basket.”
How will all of New York State’s new benefits be funded?
Mamdani proposes funding these initiatives primarily by increasing the corporate tax rate to New Jersey’s 11.5%, which he believes would bring in $5 billion, along with instituting a “flat 2% tax on the wealthiest 1% of New Yorkers, those earning over $1 million per year,” as outlined on his campaign site.
He openly identifies as a democratic socialist. During a recent show, he quoted Eugene Debs, a notable socialist figure from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Mamdani has been involved with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) for many years, as reported by various sources.
Essentially, the DSA seeks to cultivate a more socialist government akin to European models where healthcare is generally “free for all,” albeit funded by significantly higher taxes on working citizens. Education is also framed as “free,” and there are housing programs aimed at providing affordable or free housing to qualifying individuals. Critics argue that this approach can lead to greater financial strain on the middle class, often resulting in substantial tax increases to support various programs, and there’s a concern that socialism may drift toward communism.
Mamdani accepts Islam
Mamdani is open about his Muslim faith, which has played a role in his campaign. Reports say he regularly attends several mosques and even released a campaign video in Urdu to address the city’s cost-of-living challenges. Mamdani will be New York’s first Muslim mayor.
“We know that being visible as a Muslim means sacrificing the safety that can sometimes be found in the shadows,” he remarked at a rally.
He also holds strong views regarding the situation in Gaza, accusing Israel of genocide and calling for the arrest of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, claims that have been categorically denied by Israeli officials.
What New Yorkers and Trump think about Mamdani
Reactions among New Yorkers are mixed regarding Mamdani’s new role as mayor. Meanwhile, former President Trump has openly criticized Mamdani’s proposals, even threatening to withhold federal funding from New York state as a form of protest.
