EU Bows to Farmers, Imposes Restrictions on Some Ukrainian Agriculture

In response to strong pressure from farmers across Europe, the EU on Wednesday added several staple foods to the list of Ukrainian agricultural products to prevent Ukraine from flooding European markets with cheap produce and reducing local production. The company announced that it would be added as an “emergency stop.” farmers.

The European Parliament agreed on Wednesday to extend the suspension of tariffs and other restrictions on Ukraine’s agricultural exports to the EU for another year, until at least June 5, 2025, to support the war-torn country’s economy. It was announced that. . But farmers across Europe complain that cheap Ukrainian produce is unfairly squeezing their profits. Ukraine does not produce under the same restrictive and expensive environmental regulations and has a much cheaper labor force.

Following months of tractor protests by farmers across Europe (particularly the closure of Ukraine and Poland’s borders), the EU announced it would add oats, corn, groats and honey to its emergency suspension list. Above averages set in 2022 and 2023.

Adding grains to the list is an important move, as the list previously included only items such as eggs, poultry and sugar. However, the EU refused to include wheat on the emergency suspension list for Ukraine, which is known as Europe’s “breadbasket” due to its large wheat production.

Rep. Sandra Carniete European People’s Party Said On the compromise: “Tonight’s agreement strengthens the EU’s continued commitment to support Ukraine until it wins in the face of Russia’s brutal war of aggression.” Targeting food production also affects farmers in the EU.

“Parliament has heard their concerns and strengthened safeguards to relieve pressure on EU farmers should they be overwhelmed by a surge in imports from Ukraine.”

The announcement marks the second major concession won by European farmers in recent months, with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announcing last month that farmers would be required to reduce their mehandled and nitrogen emissions by 2040. He said he would scrap a plan that would have mandated a one-third cut in volume. Within the same period he abandoned plans to cut suppurative use in half.

In a blow to Great Reset supporters, farmers have also successfully pressured Eurocrats to end their anti-meat propaganda campaign.

However, many farmers’ groups appear intent on continuing their protests and applying pressure ahead of June’s European Parliament elections, where pro-farmer populists are expected to win a significant victory.

Mr. Sławomir Izdebski, Chairman of the OPZZ Farmers and Agricultural Association Said On Wednesday, he said the latest agreement does not go far enough, saying it lacks protections for livestock workers and milk producers.

Polish farmers will seek to continue their destructive protests on the border with Ukraine, demanding that the Polish government withdraw from the European Green Deal and close borders to non-EU agriculture.

According to Polish state news agency PAP, 580 farmers’ protests were held across the country on Wednesday, with farmers saying: “We apologize for the inconvenience, but we have an obligation to break the green order.” You will feel hungry, you will be respected,” he held up a banner reading. Farmer”.
