EU Imposes Almost $28B In Counter-Tariffs As Trump’s Steel And Aluminum Tariffs Begin

The European Union retaliated its own tariffs in response to President Donald Trump's 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum products that came into effect Wednesday.

First, the 27-nation European trade bloc will allow for the suspension of existing 2018 and 2020 “measures” against the US to expire on April 1st.st. Second, the committee has proposed a new package of “measures” on products coming from the US, which will come into effect in April, covering nearly $28 billion in imports.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called the 25% US tariff on global metal imports “unfair trade restrictions.”

“I deeply regret this measure,” von der Leyen said in a statement.st.

“Taxes are taxes. They're bad for businesses and even worse for consumers,” von der Leyen said Wednesday. “These tariffs are disrupting the supply chain. They bring uncertainty to the economy. Work is at risk. Prices are rising. In Europe and the US.”

“The European Union must act to protect consumers and businesses,” she argued. “The measures we are taking today are strong but proportionate.”

The EU has revealed a 99-page list of items that could be affected by tariffs, such as fruits, vegetables and meat.

“We firmly believe that in a world filled with geopolitical and economic uncertainty, we are not our common interest in burdening our economy with tariffs. Von Der Leyen added that he tapped Trade Commissioner Maroššhefčovič to continue the dialogue to “find a better solution with the United States.”

Meanwhile, the president repeatedly argued that additional tariffs could help bring more jobs to the US, saying the US' “trade transactions with the EU are “unfair.”

“They really took advantage of us,” the president said of Europe at a cabinet meeting in February. “They don't accept our cars, essentially our produce. They don't use any kind of reasons, and we accept all of them.”

Furthermore, 47th The president has proposed separate tariffs for two neighboring countries and a further 10% tariff for China.

This comes after Trump announced Tuesday that it would increase steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada after neighboring countries charged electricity surcharges on three provinces as the tariff war continues to escalate.

The 27 member states will be explained by the EU later on Wednesday.
