European Leaders Unite Ahead of Zelensky’s Visit

In an urgent display of solidarity, leaders from the “Wishing Union” are coming together ahead of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s arrival in Washington on Monday.

This initiative follows a report that President Trump’s earlier engagements at a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin might hint at potential Ukrainian territorial loss, as highlighted in discussions on Friday.

Trump is now actively promoting a three-way summit with both Zelensky and Putin, pushing for a swift resolution.

French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Kiel Preferential, and German Prime Minister Friedrich Merz are set to meet on Sunday to discuss their strategy.

The upcoming talks with Putin are among the top priorities for Trump this week, centered around the ongoing Ukraine conflict.

The “Joyful Union” intends to present a united front just before Zelensky’s discussions with Trump. In a joint statement on August 13, Macron, Preferential, and Merz emphasized their commitment to ensuring Ukraine’s security, asserting a refusal to make territorial concessions under pressure.

Reports indicate that Putin’s proposals may unfairly favor Russia, potentially leading to significant territorial shifts to their advantage. Furthermore, he seems to be aligning with China as a guarantor, sidelining NATO, which European nations consider a direct threat to their security.

Trump has noted that European leaders are depending on him to navigate these complex negotiations. “There are many European leaders looking to me for guidance. Without my involvement, this situation might persist indefinitely,” he remarked during a press conference last week.

Thanks to Zelenskyy and NATO, European leadership supports his participation in the upcoming Trump-Putin summit.

The White House has yet to respond to requests for comment.

Zelensky appears to be at a critical juncture as he prepares to meet Trump, who is expected to steer the outcome of the discussions. European leaders feel their coalition could provide added support when Zelensky engages in talks. The Ukrainian Embassy in Washington has not yet commented on this situation.

Trump has expressed a desire to convene a three-way meeting with Putin by August 22, aiming to bring all parties together and see if any progress can be achieved. This meeting would mark their first face-to-face discussion since the conflict began.

The term “Willing’s Union” initially referred to the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003, but now it serves in Europe to resist peace agreements that might forcibly alter Ukrainian borders.

Sunday’s meeting is expected to set the stage for discussions Zelensky will have at the White House on Monday, and whether Trump’s push for a trilateral summit will demonstrate the EU’s genuine influence, or simply yield to the dictates of Washington and Moscow.

Macron’s office and Prime Minister Mertz’s representatives have not yet responded to inquiries regarding this matter.
