EU Leaders Urge Trump on Ukraine Security

European Union leaders are pressing President Trump to safeguard their security interests, emphasizing that a ceasefire in Eastern Europe hinges on Ukraine’s participation.

This call for action comes just ahead of the highly anticipated summit between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, scheduled for later this week in Alaska.

All EU countries except Hungary expressed their support for Trump’s efforts to end the three-year conflict between Russia and Ukraine, but cautioned against any changes to borders that occur “by force.”

“A just and lasting peace that ensures stability must adhere to international law, respecting principles like independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity,” they stated.

“The Ukrainian populace should have the autonomy to determine their own future. Any peace process in Ukraine cannot be decided without Ukraine being involved,” they continued. “Serious negotiations can only occur in the context of ceasefires and reduced conflict.”

European politicians are striving to influence the forthcoming summit, which they will not attend. Trump has suggested territorial exchanges could enhance relations between both countries as part of a potential peace agreement, but this stance has disappointed European leaders following Ukrainian President Voldymir Zelensky’s refusal.

Trump has criticized Zelensky for his resistance to ceding any territory.

“I found it somewhat concerning that Zelensky mentioned needing constitutional approval. He seems okay with entering into war and causing destruction, but needs consent for land exchanges,” Trump remarked.

German Prime Minister Friedrich Merz has invited Trump, Zelensky, Vice President Vance, and European leaders to scheduled discussions on Wednesday to explore ways to increase pressure on Russia and prepare for imminent peace talks.

“Russia’s aggressive actions against Ukraine will significantly affect both European and international security,” an EU leader mentioned in a statement. “We believe that diplomatic solutions must safeguard the crucial security interests of both Ukraine and Europe.”

Working alongside the US and other aligned partners, the EU continues to offer Ukraine humanitarian aid, political support, military assistance, and financial resources.

As European lawmakers gear up for the Trump-Putin conference, Russian forces have intensified their assaults on Ukraine, attacking military training sites overnight, resulting in at least 11 fatalities and 11 injuries, according to Ukrainian ground forces. For security reasons, the specific location of these facilities remains undisclosed.

“A Ukraine capable of defending itself is essential for future security guarantees,” the EU leader noted. “The European Union and its member states stand ready to enhance security assurances, factoring in the security and defense needs of each member based on their own capabilities, always in alignment with international law.”

They also reaffirmed their commitment to support Ukraine’s journey towards EU membership.
