Trump Looks to Acquire Greenland Following Maduro’s Detainment
European allies are reportedly collaborating on strategies in the event that the Trump administration attempts to secure Greenland, following the recent arrest of Nicolás Maduro. According to a statement made on Wednesday, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrault mentioned that this topic would be discussed with his counterparts from Germany and Poland.
“We want to take action, but we’re also keen to cooperate with our European partners,” Barrault said during an interview with France Interradio.
A German official confirmed that Germany is working alongside other European nations and Denmark to determine the next steps related to Greenland.
As the Trump administration explores the potential acquisition of Greenland, the White House is evaluating a “wide range of options,” which may include military involvement.
On Tuesday, the White House reiterated that President Trump views acquiring Greenland as a matter of national security. During the dialogue, White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt emphasized that various strategies are being discussed and that the military’s involvement is a possible option at the President’s discretion.
This notion of acquiring Greenland for security reasons was echoed by Trump himself, who claimed that the U.S. requires Greenland—a territory owned by Denmark—for national security purposes.
However, this assertion has met with opposition from European leaders. Finnish President Alexander Stubbe, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, and Danish Ambassador to the U.S., Jesper Møller Sørensen have all reiterated their support for Danish sovereignty. They insist that the future of Greenland should ultimately be determined by the island and Denmark.
Amid these discussions, a senior European official noted that Denmark needs to spearhead efforts to organize a coordinated response, as there hasn’t been a clear indication of the specific support Denmark requires from its allies.
