Eve Plumb Shares Wisdom for Young Actors

Eve Plumb, best known for her role as Jan Brady on “The Brady Bunch,” has some advice for young people trying to navigate Hollywood. In a recent interview, she emphasized the importance of knowing when to say no—a lesson that has helped her avoid the pitfalls that often trap child stars.

“I think the ability to say no as an actor is very valuable,” she mentioned. “And as humans, we always talk about setting boundaries. My parents were great about ensuring I took breaks and made good decisions. You really don’t have to agree to everything. I still remember that.”

Having stepped into the spotlight at just 10 years old, Plumb found herself part of one of TV’s most beloved families. Yet, she credits her real-life support system for helping her stay grounded amidst the industry’s pressures.

“I hope every child actor has good protective parents like mine who help them save money and steer clear of questionable situations,” she expressed. “Once you’re famous, it’s hard to go back. So, if you’re serious about pursuing it, proceed with caution.”

Reflecting on her journey, she noted that the transition from child star to adult actress was gradual. “It took me a long time to come to terms with not being that cute kid anymore. It wasn’t until my late 20s, perhaps, when I stopped landing roles that I’d auditioned for. I was pretty confident and thought I could tackle anything, but then came the disappointment of reality in Hollywood,” she explained.

In her new memoir, “Happiness Included: Jan Brady and Beyond,” Plumb shares her Hollywood experiences and personal challenges. When asked about her timing for writing the book, she shared, “I waited for the right moment. Many have urged me to tell my story, but I felt it was finally time to share.”

Writing about her past was more than just a nostalgic trip down memory lane. “The hardest part was addressing loss. The loss of my dog—and my family, too,” she reflected. “Grief is a complex thing; it evolves over time and can hit you unexpectedly.”

Starting her career early with commercial work, Plumb quickly became recognizable. She starred in notable series before fully embracing her role on “The Brady Bunch.” After the show, she transitioned into dramatic roles, appearing in projects like “Dawn: Portrait of a Teenage Runaway.”

Throughout her career, she has maintained a balance, also doing stage work and pursuing visual arts, with her pieces showcased in various galleries across the United States and Europe.
