Ex-aide to Rep Van Drew accused of staging a political attack on herself

Former Aide Charged with Faking Political Attack

Natalie Green, a 26-year-old from Ocean City, is facing charges after allegedly fabricating a political attack that led to injuries on her body. Green, who used to work for Rep. Jeff Van Drew, made her first court appearance on Wednesday. She is charged with one count of conspiracy to make false statements and another for lying to federal authorities. These charges stem from an incident that occurred in Egg Harbor Township over the summer.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in New Jersey, a co-conspirator of Green’s called 911 at midnight on July 23, reporting that they had been attacked while walking in a nature preserve. The co-conspirator alleged that three men, during this supposed assault, specifically mentioned Green’s name and referenced her job.

When law enforcement arrived, they found Green lying in the woods, bound with black zip ties around her arms and legs. Her shirt was pulled over her head, and she had multiple cuts on her face, neck, and shoulders. Disturbingly, the words “Trump” were written on her stomach, and “Racist” was inscribed on her back. At that moment, Green was reportedly crying and shouting that one of the attackers had a gun.

In a later court hearing, she stated that one or more suspects threatened her with firearms while restraining her, injuring her, and defacing her body. However, as investigations progressed, officials concluded that the alleged attack was fabricated. It appears that Green had, in fact, hired a body modification artist to create the injuries. They also found similar black zip ties in her vehicle, leading to further suspicions about her claims. Additionally, a phone linked to the co-conspirator had previously searched for local suppliers of zip ties.

A spokesperson for Van Drew expressed sadness over the situation, stating that while Natalie is no longer associated with his office, they wished her well and hoped she receives the necessary care.

As for the legal side of things, the conspiracy charge could mean up to five years in prison and hefty fines. The same penalties apply for the charge of making false statements. Green is currently out on $200,000 unsecured bail under certain conditions.

Green joined Van Drew’s team in a part-time capacity in 2022 and later became his constitutional advocate.
