Ex-Biden diplomat associates ‘free Palestine’ phrase with violence following killings.

Free Palestine’ Slogan Called a “Call for Violence” by Former Biden Diplomat

A former diplomat under President Biden, Ambassador Deborah Lippstadt, stated on Thursday that the slogan “Free Palestine” has evolved into a “call for violence.” Her comments followed the tragic murder of two staffers at the Israeli Embassy earlier this week. In an interview with CNN, Lippstadt, who previously oversaw efforts against anti-Semitism, argued that the meaning of “Free Palestine” has shifted and now fosters violent actions against Jews.

“There’s no doubt about what people initially intended with that phrase,” she said. “But now, it’s being used to incite violence, which is not just against Israelis, but against Jews in general.”

The shooting incident has drawn significant attention. Sarah Milgrim was tragically killed while leaving an event at the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C. The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Elias Rodriguez from Chicago, has been charged with her murder and may face the death penalty. It’s reported that after his arrest, Rodriguez shouted “Free Palestine.”

Lippstadt expressed that she wasn’t shocked by the murder, emphasizing that Jewish communities often live in a state of vigilance against threats. “It’s part of the reality for many Jews,” she noted. She pointed out that safety is a consistent concern, especially for young Jews who frequent places like Jewish Community Centers.

During the CNN interview, Host Dana Bash discussed whether slogans shouted by alleged murderers and protesters could influence violent actions. “We hear this on the streets,” Bash pointed out. Lippstadt firmly stated that the phrase has taken on a new, dangerous meaning, even if its initial use was different.

The former diplomat further stated, “People who try to separate opposition to Israeli policies from anti-Semitism are missing the point. Anti-Semitism is simple and direct. Even if the victims were Israeli staff, this was a targeted attack against Jews.”
